18 June 2012 Citizen-Driven Accountability for Sustainable Development Brazilian Academy of Sciences

Within the frame of the upcoming Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Brazil, on June 18th the Independent Accountability Mechanisms (IAMs) at International Financial Institutions (IFIs) will hold a session on Citizen-Driven Accountability in the Context of Sustainable Development to be hosted by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in Rio de Janeiro.

The session will generate discussion about the evolution of citizen-driven accountability in development cooperation since the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, which confirmed the importance of environmental justice and access to recourse for equitable and sustainable development outcomes. Independent Accountability Mechanisms, and the Inspection Panel in particular, are in many ways 'children' of the Earth Summit in 1992.

The event will bring together the members of the civil society and academia, international financial institutions, governments and private sector representatives, where the IAMs will present the joint IAMs’ publication entitled “Citizen-Driven Accountability for Sustainable Development: Giving Affected People a Greater Voice – 20 Years On" as a contribution to the Rio+20 Conference. See its Brief Summary.
